Celebrating Our Veterans

Celebrating Our Veterans

I speak for all of us at Artsy Olive when I say how thankful we are for our nation’s veterans. All who serve and have served deserve gratitude beyond what we can give. Their stories are ones worth telling and remembering.

The military has great personal significance to me. Both my grandfathers were eager to sign up and serve in WWII. My maternal grandfather Scot Watkins had four older brothers enlist, but he was too young at the time to join them. The day he turned eighteen, he enlisted, going on to serve as a Marine in Guam. Carol Upton, my dad’s dad, tried to join the fight as an Army pilot, but he was kept from service due to his red-green color blindness. Despite this, he raised his children and grandchildren to love this great country. I also have several uncles who served in various branches, and one of my best friends named Zach is deployed with the Army in Afghanistan.

Fans of Artsy Olive love our veterans, too! In a recent social media post, our followers shared about service men and women that they were thankful for. The stories were real and poignant from families and friends of those who have sacrificed so much for the rest of us. I recommend browsing through some of the comments if you get a chance.

There are many sayings about how important veterans are to America, but none of them can really say enough. For my part, I think Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” comes closest. Happy Veterans Day!

  • Beautifully written and very honoring to our veterans. The thought of their ultimate sacrifice is something most of us would not be able to do. . We the living must protect the democracy and freedom that was bought with the lives of such men and women.

    • Couldn’t agree more, Pam. Benjamin Franklin once said that we have a republic if we can keep it. Our veterans have done the hard part of that–all the rest of us have to do is live it out to honor them.
